A193 Seafront Active Travel Scheme (May 2026)

Overview

The A193 Seafront Active Travel scheme will bring improvements to existing infrastructure and new infrastructure established between Kingsway to Old Hartley.  The scheme will connect with current active travel improvement works on Bondicar Terrace to the north (and onwards to Blyth Town Centre) and connect to improvement works in North Tyneside (Sustainable Seafront Scheme) to the south.

In delivering this scheme, we will be:

  • Improving street lighting – creating a well lit space for all

  • Improving drainage – reducing water pooling on pavements

  • Enhancing pavement quality – creating smoother spaces for journeys on foot, meaning less trips and slips

  • Improving bus stop facilities – ensuring there are raised kerbs, providing step free access onto and off buses, removing conflict with the existing cycle route (in Seaton Sluice) where bus passengers have to use the cycle route to board and alight busses

  • Providing clearly segregated space – for the entire route along the A193 (6.3km) providing clearly defined space for walkers, wheelers and cyclists.  The first of this kind in Northumberland

  • Improving road safety – through improved crossing points at problematic roundabout junctions, and along the route, providing clear priorities for all

  • Reducing speed limits – by lowering the speed limit and introducing traffic calming (in Seaton Sluice), an area which is known for speeding

The ambition is to deliver a series of 'pocket places' at the same time, these pocket places will provide space for people to sit, rest and play and engage with the local environment.

These works are of regional significance as they will advance active travel improvement works from neighbouring authorities, they will form an extension from the network improvements made to date in Sunderland, South Tyneside and North Tyneside.
